About
Red Bull Flugtag

Red Bull Flugtag challenges the brave and brainy to design, build and pilot home-made flying machines off a 30-foot high flight deck in hopes of soaring into the wild blue yonder…or more often, plunging into the waters below. Flugtag, which means “flying day” in German, pushes the envelope of human-powered flight, but competitors need more than airtime to reach the podium. Teams are judged on three criteria: flight distance, creativity of the craft, and showmanship. This criteria has inspired flying tacos, prehistoric pterodactyls, winnebagos with wings and even Snoopy and the gang to grace the Flugtag flight decks! Since the first Red Bull Flugtag took place in Vienna, Austria, in 1991, more than 100 Red Bull Flugtags have been held around the globe, attracting up to 300,000 spectators for a single event.

WHAT IS RED BULL FLUGTAG?

“Flugtag” literally translates to “flying day”. It is a unique flying contest just for the public, where daredevil teams and budding pilots have the chance to show off their creativity, inventiveness & adventurousness in building human powered aircrafts that are launched from a 22-foot-high ramp.

When did the first Red Bull Flugtag take place?

The first ever Red Bull Flugtag took place in Austria back in 1991.

Is Red Bull Flugtag a “world series” of events?

No, each city’s event is run independently, but Red Bull has spread its wings all over the world, with over 150 events taking off in cities like Stockholm, Moscow, Ottawa, Chicago, Buenos Aires and Abu Dhabi.  In 2016 the US will host 2 events; Louisville, KY & Boston, MA.

What do the crafts typically look like?

How much imagination do you have? Red Bull Flugtag flying machines range from realistic plane replicas to anything the imagination can conjure up. Past crafts include a Flying Purple People Eater, Santa and his sleigh, a flying toilet and even a flying cheeseburger. To gain more showmanship points, participants often wear outrageous costumes, act out skits and create their own music soundtracks for the flight.

WHAT ARE THE RULES?

All crafts must be human-powered – no engines or external energy sources allowed. Prefabricated crafts will not be accepted. Each craft must be less than 28-feet wide and not more than 400 lbs. (including the pilot), and craft pilots must be at least 18 years old.

What's the furthest flown at a Red Bull Flugtag?

The current world record flight is 258 feet and was set on September 21, 2013 in Long Beach, CA by “The Chicken Whisperers”.

I haven't entered but I can bring my own craft along?

We’re afraid not. Our fearless teams have worked hard to earn their place on the Red Bull Flugtag ramp. Only these teams will fly on event day.

HOW MANY TEAMS ARE INVOLVED?

Thirty-six teams from throughout the Midwest have been selected to compete.

HOW WILL TEAMS BE JUDGED?

All crafts must be human-powered – no engines or external energy sources allowed. Each craft must be less than 28 feet wide, 24 feed long and not more than 400 lbs. (including the pilot). Craft pilots must be at least 18 years old.

A panel of judges has been recruited for the day to rank and rate each team’s performance across three categories, as follows:

Creativity: This is all about the design and originality of both the flying machine and the  crew, the more inventive the better.

Showmanship: Teams will have to perform on the platform before take-off.

Distance: Self-explanatory really. Just try to fly as far across the water as you can.

Each team has been encouraged to give equal consideration to all criteria to ensure they score the maximum amount of possible points.

WHEN IS RED BULL FLUGTAG – LOUISVILLE?

Red Bull Flugtag – Louisville will hit the shores of Kentucky’s Waterfront Park on Saturday, August 27th 2016.

Rules

The rules

1

Build

2

Safety

3

Team

You will be launching into water, so make sure your craft floats.  Wherever possible select materials which are lighter than water (wood, foam etc.) rather than metal.  Obviously there may be parts of the craft which require metal in their design, in which case, make sure these are attached to some kind of flotation device.

Only Human Power is permitted – no motors, rockets, battery power or sneaky elastic bands.

Your entry must be entirely designed and constructed by the Team; you cannot adapt a light aircraft or hang-gliders.

Your design must be no longer than 28 feet from wing-tip to wing-tip (assuming it has such things as wings), and no longer than 20 feet from nose to tail (assuming it has these too). Craft and pilot combined cannot exceed 400 lbs.  The pilot on top of the craft must be in a good crouch position, not exceeding 10 ft high.

Your aircraft needs to get up the flight deck ramp and be recovered from the river, so make it as light as possible – and preferably use materials which don’t become waterlogged (like heavy fabrics).  This also applies to your costumes.

Avoid the use of any toxic material or substance which may dissolve into the river.  We have a duty to protect the environment we’re using and this means selecting build materials carefully.  You are also strongly advised not to use materials which may fragment or be hard to clear up.

When you are designing and building, consider what is likely to happen when it hits the water.  Make sure there are no hard or sharp surfaces around the cockpit which may cause injury.  Round off those corners and make sure no nails, screws or other sharp fixings project near handholds or the Pilot.

All crafts will be recovered from the river by the production team and trashed on a barge…. down by the river!

Red Bull Flugtag is meant to be an enjoyable day out for participants and spectators, but there is clearly an element of risk involved in leaping into a river off a 22-foot-high ramp and relying on a homemade aircraft for support. The basic rules below are an absolute requirement for participants.

All participants who jump MUST wear a life jacket and helmet provided by the production team.

The Pilot MUST NOT be strapped into the plane, or enclosed in any capsule or cockpit from which they can’t readily escape.

Any costume you wear must not pose any risk of getting caught in the aircraft or hampering the Pilot’s ability to see, breath or stay afloat.

All Pilots and Ground Crew who jump must be able to swim 100 yards unaided. When you design your costumes, remember you will have to swim in them…

Each team is responsible for the safe design and construction of their aircraft, and we’ll help wherever we can. Your design will be subject to inspection by our Safety Team, who will do all they can to ensure your flight is safe. If the Safety Team isn’t 100% satisfied, you will have to make adjustments.

When you are finalizing construction on site, and when you launch, the Pilot and Ground Crew shall not be under the influence of alcohol.  This also means not jumping with a serious hangover.  Any team or person who does appear under the influence will be disqualified.

Each team shall consist of five people: one Pilot and four Ground Crew members.

All ground crew members must be at least 16 years of age and the pilot must be 18 years of age or older.

RED BULL FLUGTAG SPLASHES INTO THE OHIO RIVER

RED BULL FLUGTAG SPLASHES INTO THE OHIO RIVER

RED BULL FLUGTAG SPLASHES INTO THE OHIO RIVER

Tens of thousands flocked to Waterfront Park to witness Team MMMad MMMax claim victory in the first ever Red Bull Flugtag Louisville

LOUISVILLE, KY – August 27, 2016 – Amateur aviators from Kentucky and surrounding states soared across the Ohio River today in homemade flying machines, as Red Bull Flugtag touched down in Louisville for the very first time.

The Dukes of Hazzardous flew an impressive 81 feet from the 22-foot-high flight deck, however the competition comes down to more than distance, as MMMad MMMax’s craft design won over the judges and ultimately sealed victory for the team.

“It shows that your craft has to be well rounded to win this type of competition. If you want to fly, you are going to have to put in hard work. Our commitment throughout the summer definitely paid off,” said MMMad MMMax pilot, Jeremiah Jorgensen.

Other homemade human-powered flying machines included a Muhammad Ali inspired boxing ring, a flying Louisville Cardinal, a Bourbon barrel, a wingless pink flamingo and an inflatable blowfish.

Chosen from hundreds of submissions, 34 teams put months of design, labor, practice and love into their crafts, costumes and routines. In addition to distance, they were also judged on creativity and showmanship, with each performing a skit to their favorite tune before taking the plunge and hoping to get some air.

Final Team Rankings:

  1. MMMad MMMax
  2. The Dukes of Hazzardous
  3. Kentucky Power

The coveted People’s Choice Award went to Mercy-No-Mercy, a local fan favorite comprised of teachers from Mercy Academy.

“This award takes the cake. It shows we’ve got the best fans and the best group of girls – this is awesome,” said Mercy-No-Mercy team pilot, Steve Hammer.

Judges included Super Bowl XXXIX MVP, Deion Branch, Red Bull professional rock climber, Sasha Digiulian, Red Bull Air Force Team Members Jeff Provenzano and Sean MacCormac, local entertainment reporter Kirby Adams and honorary judge, Mayor Greg Fischer.

Since 1991, Red Bull Flugtag (which translates to “Flying Day” in German) has made stops around the world challenging competitors to build and pilot homemade human powered flying machines.

Celebrating the magic of teamwork, creativity of everyday people and the love of flight; the silly yet serious competition could not have been possible in Louisville without the support of The City of Louisville and Louisville Waterfront Park.

40 Teams Take to the Skies August 27TH

LOUISVILLE (June 2, 2016) – Teams from nearly ten states across the nation will dare to defy gravity with their human-powered flying machines on August 27 at Red Bull Flugtag Louisville. After reviewing hundreds of applications, 40 teams were selected to participate in the quirky flying competition. Teams like Mercy-no-Mercy, Kentucky Flying Colonels, Millennial Falcon, U of L Sustainability and Team Zissou will entertain the crowds as they launch their crafts with hopes of soaring across the Ohio River.

Since 1991, Red Bull Flugtag (which translates to “Flying Day” in German) has made stops around the world challenging competitors to build and pilot homemade human powered flying machines. With the backdrop of the Ohio River, the outrageous flying competition will make its Midwest debut at Waterfront Park on Saturday, August 27th.

Red Bull Flugtag will boast 40 outrageous crafts, ranging from a flying toilet paper roll to supersized blowfish built by participants ranging from college students to aviation experts. Half of the selected teams, including Thrilla In Lou-villa, Bourbon Flight, and The Ville-ociraptors, to name a few, originate out of Louisville itself, with other participants traveling from homes as far as Oswego, OR and Jupiter, FL. Each team of five will need to bring out their inner daredevil in order to truly make a splash against a wide array of talent.

On August 27th, selected competitors will take the plunge off the 22-foot-high flight deck in front of thousands of roaring fans as they attempt to break the 258-foot distance record, set in 2013.
